Call for graduate student mentors | CU Boulder today

The CU Boulder McNair Scholarship Program is a federal TRIO grant designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies by participating in research and other academic activities. McNair Fellows are either first generation students with financial need or members of a group traditionally under-represented in graduate studies. The aim of the program is to increase the doctoral level of students from under-represented segments of society.

Graduate student mentors will be individually matched with an undergraduate McNair Fellow. Graduate student mentors provide increased access to guidance on the graduate application and transition process through their own recent doctoral entry experiences. We hope that mentor-academic relationships will persist and develop over the course of an academic year (or longer if desired). The time commitment is small, but the impact is great.

McNair Scholars graduate student mentors will be invited to:

  • Meet with academics twice per semester (hybrid model, depending on the decision of each mentor-mentee) to answer questions related to the graduate application process, the transition to graduate studies, the mentor’s experiences in their program. studies and other aspects of life as a medical student.
  • Use their personal experiences to help guide researchers through the application process for doctoral programs and scholarship competitions.
  • Provide support and encouragement to academics as they navigate the transition from undergraduate to graduate studies in their respective fields.

Graduate students who wish to become McNair Mentors must complete the Google Survey by Friday, September 24. The survey asks applicants for a short bio, which will be distributed to all current McNair Fellows to facilitate the match of mentors and academics. Current McNair Fellows study primarily in STEM fields, and less in social sciences and humanities.

There will be an on-site welcome meeting on Tuesday, October 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. for academics and mentors and a virtual training session for mentors on Friday, October 22 (time to be determined). Interested graduate students can email [email protected] with any additional questions.
