We are lagging behind due to research proposal writing issues – deplores ATBU

While other universities across the country are doing all they can academically to achieve excellence and high rankings, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi does not move with the tide, thus remaining stagnant.

The lament was made by the management of the University who attributed its recent appalling performance in the ranking of universities by the National University Commission (NUC), to the lack of location of the research works, to the non-uploading of the works of Google Scholar research and lack of collaboration. , among others.

The University’s Director of Research, Innovation and Development Prof. Fatima Sawa speaking at a reduction workshop on Writing a Grant Proposal for the ATBU on the Gubi’s permanent campus of the University, said: “As you all know, the ranking of the universities had come out, and you could see that the ATBU was functioning in a terrible way.”

Professor Fatima Sawa added that “Some of the things that have affected us are things that we do not consider important. For example, we don’t localize our research, we prefer outside search sites, we don’t upload our research to Google Scholar, so we’re not visible ”.

According to her, “We also don’t have collaboration, we don’t have international students, we don’t have international lecturers and our students versus staff, these are some of the criteria that have been used and we have problems there ”.

Fatima Sawa recalled that a similar workshop was held in September, involving institutions from the northeastern states of Nigeria ahead of the announcement for the TETFund National Research Fund and also for other accessible research grants. .

Don University pointed out that “So we noted that despite this workshop we had, we still have some shortcomings, most of our members are not aware of the requirements of TETFund concept notes and how to solve the problems there ”.

“Thus, the management of the University
called on them to support us so that we could have a Step-down workshop exclusively for people who submitted concept notes for us to review and this was approved, ”noted the director.

According to her, the aim of the workshop was for them to come together to bring their concept notes to the required status, adding that out of more than 50 concept notes submitted, none met the criteria.

She said: “So if we had just come forward and submitted to TETfund, at the end of the day no one from ATBU would benefit, and we don’t want that to happen, it has already happened and we don’t. want this to happen again, and that’s why we’ve decided we’re going to have a hands-on interaction so we’re guided on how to write concept notes ”.

The manager who informed that they are fully equipped with all ICT facilities to make all the corrections noted that the download will be done during the training so that they just wait for the result.

While declaring that ATBU is a high-ranking institution in Nigeria, the Director instructed the participants to be careful during the workshop in order to have a successful outcome at the end of the program.

“In terms of research grants, let’s not just talk about TetFund, any form of research grant, there is hardly anyone at this university who has attracted a research grant,” she said.

While declaring the workshop open, University Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammed Ahmad Abdulazeez said that no nation can progress without investing in research and development.

Represented by the administrator of the DVC, Professor Ibrahim Garba, the vice-chancellor argued that for innovation to take place, massive investments in research and development must be made.

“Unless you invest heavily in R and D, there is no way to innovate, and therefore, you will lose the benefit of this particular century which is guided by knowledge,” he said.

The VC also stated that it is in this context that the management of the University has expressed particular concern regarding its performance in the 2020 NRF fiscal year.

According to him, “Unless we are living in the past glory, this particular performance should be of concern to everyone and take into account the recent ranking of Nigerian universities by NUC even though the methodology is starting to be challenged by a number of people. of universities including us, it still does not mean that we are bottom in the ranking, it is also a call for concern ”.
