McAuliffe and Youngkin Offer Competing Visions on COVID and the Economy in Final Debate | Government-and-politics

Youngkin supports maintaining the right to work and qualified immunity.

Youngkin has said firmly that he will at no time support adding a woman’s abortion right to the constitution of the state.

Youngkin has said throughout the campaign that he opposes abortions and will support a ban around the time a fetus may be in pain, which some states have defined as 20 weeks. Youngkin supports exceptions in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is in danger.

McAuliffe has said he would support the inclusion of the protections afforded by Roe v. Wade in the state constitution. Asked about third trimester abortions, McAuliffe said he supported the policies currently in place in the state, which allow third trimester abortions under limited circumstances and with the consent of a doctor.

2024 presidential election

Youngkin has said that if former President Donald Trump runs again in 2024 and becomes the party’s candidate, he will back him.

“If he is the Republican candidate, I will support him.”

McAuliffe was also asked about the 2024 presidential election, given he was considering running after a failed exploratory bid ahead of the 2020 election. When asked if he would commit to complete his tenure from 2022 to 2026, he replied, “Yes, absolutely. And listen, I watched 2020, it didn’t go too far.
