ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Warren Janke, 71, died on June 25, 2021 in Albuquerque. Born in Great Bend, Kan., Son of Raymond and Ruth Janke, he spent his early years growing up on the family farm. He attended Claflin Schools and graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in construction. After participating in the AFROTC, he entered the United States Air Force and was stationed at bases in the United States and a tour of Japan where he met his wife Regina. While in the Air Force, he worked in civil engineering squadrons. After an honorable discharge from AF, he returned to complete a Master of Science in Building

Construction of Texas A&M University in 1980: Always be proud to be an Aggie.

His parents died before him. He is survived by his wife Regina of 43 years; her sister Sheryl Janke of Roanoke, Virginia; and several cousins.

Warren will be remembered by his friends and many others who were touched by his kindness and generosity. After graduating from Texas A&M, he was employed by the US Army Corps of Engineers and was stationed at Fort. Polk, Louisiana. His assignments gradually moved him westward, ending his 24-year government career in the United States Corps of Engineers district office in Albuquerque before retiring in 2005. Since his childhood, he has been passionate about the field. flight and trains. He obtained his private pilot’s license and loved to build and fly radio controlled aircraft for many years. He was an active member of the local EAA Chapter 530 in Los Lunas for several years. His love of trains led him to collect and assemble model trains and build a train plan. He became a member of the Historical Society of Steam Locomotives and Railroads of New Mexico, hoping to see it eventually roll and operate.

Shortly after his retirement, he was diagnosed with cancer and successfully underwent medical and surgical treatment. It was during his retirement years that his new passions blossomed. After living the life-changing experience of cancer, he began volunteering at the New Mexico Cancer Center, later becoming a board member of the New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation for a time. His faith led him to believe he should do this job, giving over 13 years and 6,500 hours of listening, sharing and helping both patients and nurses, reaching countless people in the process. in the metro Albuquerque area. As a result of his volunteer work, Warren felt called to become an ordained chaplain in order to enhance his abilities to bring comfort to those in need. He was honored in 2018 as Senior Volunteer of the Year for Albuquerque. He quickly became better known as “The Cakeman” for the cakes he made for his volunteer days. He took an interest in the education system and volunteered to help the teachers at Los Lunas Middle School in the computer lab, focusing on activities that could improve math skills, such as the flight simulator. He created the Janke Educational Foundation in which he collaborated with the school administration to recognize the dedication and work of teachers. He created the Janke Family Memorial Scholarship for students at Claflin High School. He has also generously and freely donated his time, expertise, and materials to both Peralta Memorial United Methodist Church and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. His work in churches intensified with the onset of the pandemic that interrupted his stay at the Cancer Center. His work in the pantry of the Methodist Church in Peralta also had an impact on the functions of the pantry and on the community. He showed humility in his generosity. For many who knew and loved Warren, he embodied and lived what the Lord taught us in Matthew, chapter 6: 1-3 [ESV]. “Be careful not to practice your righteousness before others so that you may be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. So, when you give to the needy, do not sound the trumpet in front of you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward. But when giving to the needy, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. ”
