UWS Civil Engineering Scholarship Launched With Graduate Gift

A graduate of the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has offered £ 10,000 for a scholarship to support BEng civil engineering students.

Gerry Donnelly studied the course at UWS 38 years ago and pledged the money due to his own positive experience at the University, where he won the prestigious Eccles Fellowship for International Travel. Mr. Donnelly – a prominent fellow of the American Institute of Civil Engineering – used the scholarship to travel to the United States and then launched a successful 38-year career with engineering giant, STV Incorporated.

Professor Carl Schaschke, Dean of the School of Computer Science, Engineering and Physical Sciences, said: “We are delighted to accept Gerry’s generous gift.

“Gerry has had a fantastic career in civil engineering and we are grateful for his support. We look forward to awarding two of our students the Gerry Donnelly Scholarship in Civil Engineering later this year.

Launched on October 1, the scholarship will see £ 1,000 each year awarded to two third-year BEng civil engineering students, with the funding program spanning five years.

Although he now lives in the United States, Mr Donnelly is originally from Neilston and has close ties to Scotland. After a recent visit to the UWS campus in Paisley, Mr. Donnelly decided he wanted to give something back to the University, in recognition of the significant and positive impact his time at UWS had on his career.

Mr. Donnelly said: “I believe the education and training I received at UWS gave me a technical and practical edge when I started my career and I want to help support the next generation. civil engineers. A scholarship has been essential in my studies and I hope this scholarship will have a similar impact on current UWS civil engineering students.

Applications for the scholarship will be open to third-year civil engineering students from BEng at UWS until Friday, October 29, 2021. Applicants must submit a 400-word narrative describing how the scholarship will support their academic, professional and personal ambitions .
