Several instruments of the civil engineering department of JU missing

Calcutta, July 16 (PTI) Several instruments from the civil engineering department of the University of Jadavpur were found missing, University Registrar Snehamanju Basu said.

Some computers in the Bengali Department of the Arts Building were also missing at the same time on Wednesday, she said.

Basu told PTI that the theft was detected on Wednesday evening and university officials filed a complaint with the Jadavpur Police Station that day.

“A team from Lalbazar (Kolkata Police Headquarters) also visited the university premises and the department building on Thursday. It is difficult to immediately determine the extent of the loss because parts of many instruments are missing. We are going to get to the bottom of it, ”she said Thursday.

The civil engineering department’s laboratory, which houses the instruments, is located near one of the gates to the vast JU campus.

According to preliminary estimates, a faculty member said that 70 percent of the instruments in the civil engineering department appeared to be partially or completely missing.

The Association of Professors of the University of Jadavpur (JUTA) in a letter to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Suranjan Das, expressed concern that important soil analysis instruments in the laboratory of the Department of civil engineering as well as other tools were missing, as well as computers in the Bengali department and wondered “how heavy instruments can be removed from well secured buildings.” JUTA General Secretary Parthapratim Roy urged authorities to unravel the mystery for the benefit of students, faculty and all stakeholders.

No on-campus classes have been held at the university for over a year, and the VC, Registrar, Deans and Professors attend campuses at regular intervals. PTI SUS RG RG
