Professor Wingate Chosen to Participate in Leadership Fellowship Program | Requestor diary


WINGATE – Andrew Woods, Associate Professor of Pharmacy at Wingate University, has been selected to participate in the 2021-2022 Academic Leadership Fellows program of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. He joins the 18th cohort of 30 who represent some of the brightest future leaders in academic pharmacy across the country.

Dr Woods joined the Wingate faculty in 2009 and provides pharmacist services as a clinical team leader in internal medicine at Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center Main in downtown Charlotte, precepting students from third and fourth years. During his time at the University, he published over 50 articles, book chapters and abstracts and made numerous regional and national presentations. Within the School of Pharmacy, he chairs the alumni engagement committee and actively sits on the management and strategic planning committees.

Dr. Woods’ primary research interests are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and drug-induced diseases, and he regularly presents original research on COPD at the American Thoracic Society International Conference and the American Annual Meeting. College of Chest Physicians. He has served on several interdisciplinary advisory committees for the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease to help shape guidelines for care. He is a founding member of the PRAXIS advisory board of the COPD Foundation, on which he continues to sit.

During the last year of Covid Challenges, Dr Woods’ expertise has been recognized with numerous opportunities to educate healthcare professionals on respiratory pharmacotherapy. He presented his research on antidepressants and COPD exacerbations at the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. In May, Woods received the Wingate Research Excellence Award and Fellowship for 2021.

The AACP Academic Leadership Program offers Dr Woods and other fellows the opportunity to expand their relationships with their colleagues at other institutions, as well as within their own universities.

During the one-year program, participants will explore historical perspectives of leadership, learn about conflict and the path to resolution, practice self-reflection, and examine current issues in higher education using a framework for formal debate. Sessions will cover hot topics such as relationship management; diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education; and well-being. Over 400 fellows have graduated from the program to date.

Susan Bruce, Dean of the Wingate University School of Pharmacy, said Dr Woods deserved more than this honor.

“In addition to his excellent work at the School of Pharmacy, Dr. Woods is the new Chair of the Faculty’s Senate,” said Dr. Bruce. “I truly believe that the entire University will benefit from his participation as an AACP Academic Leadership Fellow over the next year or so.”
