OBAYASHI: Bangladesh 3-Bridge Slim Tie Project Received Engineering Excellence Award


The 41st Meritorious Service in Engineering Award was announced in 2021, sponsored by the Association of Engineers, and the obayashi group’s project was awarded in two categories. EXISTING BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION TEAM OF KACHIPUR MEGNA GUMTI SHIMTI (OBAYASHI COMPANY, SHIMIZU COMPANY, JFE ENGINEERING, IHI INFRAS STEM) Highway 1, which connects dhaka, the capital of bangladesh, to chittagong, the second largest city with major ports, is the country’s most important highway with remarkable economic growth. Due to the rapid increase in traffic volume in recent years, the traffic jams became more severe and the bridges deteriorated, so with the paid financial cooperation from japan, we built shimbashi for the kachipur megna gumti 3 bridge and refurbished and reinforced the existing bridge additionally To support the old and new bridge legs, we adopted the Yaita izutsu steel tube foundation method for the first time in Bangladesh. in the upper construction of shimbashi, narrow steel box girders and synthetic floor plates were applied in combination, and the bridge was built safely by the dispatch method and in a short time. in addition, these renovations and reinforcements have greatly improved the safety performance of existing bridges. The complete opening of the shimbashi and the existing bridges to january 2020 the traffic conditions have improved considerably and the time required between dhaka and chittagong has been reduced from about 10 hours to 5 hours. Following the success of the project, plans and surveys were launched in bangladesh for high speed highways and railways between dhaka and chittagong, as well as the construction of a metro in dhaka city. This award was greatly appreciated for the project, which was an opportunity for the economic development of Bangladesh and contributed to the development of local engineers. Construction Short Period Replacement Project Team for Aging Floor Plates on Fast Growing Highways (Obayashi Company)

In the work of replacing the concrete floor plate of the aging highway, we developed and applied “Slim Fastener” using ultra high strength fiber reinforced concrete (UFC: ultra high strength fiber reinforced concrete) as the filling material of the prefabricated floor plate joint, and achieved shortening of the construction process and improving the quality of the joint.

Using Obayashi’s “Slim Cleats” developing technology, which demonstrates high strength without thermal hardening, UFC eliminates the need for additional strengthening muscles in the joints and reduces the binding width to 50% of the conventional method. A multiple shear wrench with an uneven shape is provided on the joint surface to strengthen the adhesion between the prefabricated floor plate and the infill material, preventing the joint surface from opening. increased durability of joints.
