Nigeria seeks Ukraine’s collaboration in defense, economy, trade and education

Nigerian Ambassador to Ukraine Shina Alege called for increased collaboration between Nigeria and Ukraine in the areas of economy, trade, education and defense.

Describing in particular the low volume of trade between the two countries, Alege said it had become imperative for the two countries to explore possibilities to engage in a discussion that would improve bilateral economic and trade exchanges.

Alege, who made the appeal when presenting his credentials to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stressed that it was time to vigorously pursue defense cooperation and conclude the necessary bilateral agreements.

In light of this, Alege urged the Ukrainian president to ensure that all efforts are directed towards the conclusion and signing of the protocol on the joint commission and the consolidation of the process, which started in May 2006, between the two country.

Keen to foster a new perspective on bilateral relations, Alege said it was high time the two countries supported the private sector to open up the vast trade opportunities between them.

Alege said: “Your Excellency, since Nigeria established its diplomatic presence in Ukraine, our bilateral relations have steadily developed, but we believe that we can still do more in the areas of economy and trade, education and defense. And indeed with this new dawn, we must do more.

“Your Excellency, the growing interdependence between countries such as Nigeria and Ukraine at different levels of social, political and economic development in a global village today requires a new form of reciprocity of interests and benefits , shared responsibility and genuine partnership, which we both share. .

“The current low volume of trade between the two countries in no way reflects the enormous potentials available in our respective economies and the wishes of our leaders. We can also do more in the area of defense cooperation and also ensure the swift conclusion of our bilateral agreement in these areas.

“Your Excellency, in the spirit of the new world order promoted by the digital age, the two countries must explore the possibilities of engaging in a discussion that would strengthen bilateral economic and trade exchanges. The two states should provide support to the private sector in order to open up vast opportunities for trade between them. This is what I wish to pursue vigorously in this chapter.

“Your Excellency, we hope that all efforts will be made to conclude and sign the Protocol on the Joint Commission and consolidate this process which began in May 2006 between the two countries.

“This would undoubtedly further strengthen our bilateral cooperation and the boundaries of interaction between our two countries towards a better understanding and prosperity of our people. The current low volume of trade between the two countries in no way reflects the enormous potentials available in our respective economies and the wishes of our leaders.

“We can also do more in defense cooperation and also ensure the early conclusion of our bilateral agreement in these areas.

“Your Excellency, it is necessary to declare that Nigeria is engaged in structural changes in the economy and its body politic.

“I am also happy that we have made substantial progress in restoring the core value of democracy and the associated aspect of people’s rights to a decent life.

“However, there is still a lot to do and we need Ukraine to support us in this area. In a favorable environment, economic and political exchanges between our two countries would prosper. “

While praying for the strengthening of bilateral relations, Alege commended Ukraine for its role in the development of Nigeria’s infrastructure and human resources, especially Ukraine’s support for the Ajaokuta steel plant project.
