KYTC Launches Internship Program | New

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is leading the way for higher education students who want to gain paid and hands-on work experience and help build a stronger future workforce, according to a press release.

The firm’s Minority Internship Program (MIP) provides professional development opportunities for minorities, women and others historically under-represented in the transportation industry. The deadline to apply for the spring semester is November 15, 2021.

Designed for undergraduate and graduate students at Kentucky colleges and universities, this paid internship is offered three times a year in the summer, fall, and spring to enrolled students with 30 or more credit hours. All majors are welcome to apply.

“Diversity at KYTC not only applies to our employees, but extends to the career areas we employ,” said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray. “From accounting, human resources, civil engineering and more, our Firm’s MIP program can launch careers suited to multiple academic disciplines by providing rewarding experiences for Kentucky’s promising future workforce. “

“Our Minority Internship Program provides a great opportunity for students to gain valuable experience and develop skills that will serve them well for years to come,” said Melvin Bynes, Executive Director of the KYTC Office for Civil Rights and Small Business Development. “We are looking for motivated people, with diverse backgrounds, who wish to embark on a professional career as an intern with us.

Interns have the opportunity to work in a variety of offices, with a wide range of specific assignments, at the KYTC headquarters in Frankfurt. The MIP includes mentoring, networking opportunities, hands-on work experience, and exposure to transportation-related careers.

Mikeal Watson, current MIP coordinator and 2018 MIP intern, knows firsthand how the program can help launch careers.

“When I started working at the firm, my only knowledge of the transportation industry was road works, and I didn’t realize it included a large network of people with expertise in multiple disciplines,” Watson said. “I gained real hands-on work experience, felt like a valued member of a team and then was hired as a full-time employee of KYTC. The program is a great opportunity for students to explore career paths offered at KYTC that they may not have considered before.
