Karen Hollebrands appointed Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at the College of Education


Karen Hollebrands, Ph.D., Professor of Mathematics Education and Distinguished Undergraduate Graduate, will be the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at NC State College of Education, effective October 1.

Hollebrands has been the Interim Associate Dean of the College of Education for Research and Innovation since July 15, 2020.

“As Acting Associate Dean, Karen Hollebrands has done an extraordinary job ensuring that we maintain our growth in research and fellowships and increasing collaboration and partnerships,” said Dean Mary Ann Danowitz of NC State College of Education. “A meticulous researcher with a passion for our land granting mission and a deep knowledge of our college, Dr Hollebrands will thrive in her role as Associate Dean and help our college expand its reach and impact through research. and innovative solutions that transform the practice of teaching, learning and leadership across the lifespan and across North Carolina and beyond.

As Associate Dean for Research and Innovation, Hollebrands will oversee the business and research portfolio of the College of Education.

College faculty and staff received 73 new grants from external sources during the 2020-2021 academic year, for a total of $ 17,320,883. This number of grants awarded by external sources is the highest total awarded to the college in a single year since records were kept. The college also reported research spending of $ 18 million in the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Over the past five years, college research spending has increased 39%, the largest five-year increase among all colleges in the state of North Carolina.

Additionally, based on the most recent data available, the college’s research spending was highest among educational colleges in North Carolina, 15th among public colleges nationwide, and 22nd among all. educational colleges across the country. .

Currently, faculty and staff at the college are engaged in 121 active research projects worth over $ 85 million.

Hollebrands joined NC State in 2001 as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education and became a Full Professor in 2014. She was inducted into the NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers in 2009 and was named Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor in 2014 and university professor. Fellow in 2015. She has held various leadership positions for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) and the North American section of the International Group for Educational Psychology. mathematics.

Her research examines the mathematical knowledge that students and teachers develop when they use technology, and she designs and studies the use of technology-based curricula to support teacher learning, which has been put into practice. nationwide. Since 2001, she has been involved in several grant-funded research projects including Preparing to Teach Mathematics with Technology, MOOCs for Educators, Technology-Rich Units for Future Secondary Teachers, and the North Carolina High School Mathematics Master Teacher Fellows program.

Hollebrands received her BA in Secondary Education-Mathematics from the State University of New York at Oswego and an MA in Education in Mathematics Education from our college. Before completing his doctorate. in the curriculum and teaching at Pennsylvania State University, she taught high school mathematics in New York and North Carolina.
