Carolinas AGC honors construction leaders

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, August 3, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Carolinas AGC is proud to announce the 2020 CAGC Hall of Fame and Hall of Fame Heritage winners. These winners, two who have left an incredible legacy to our industry and four who still pave the way for future leaders, embody the competence, integrity and responsibility that Carolinas AGC and Associated General Contractors stand for. These prestigious awards honor individuals, including successful ones, who have made or made extraordinary contributions during their careers to Carolinas AGC, the construction industry and the community they serve.

ACCG Hall of Fame Heritage Laureates

Raymond Bryan, TA Like

Raymond, who studied engineering at North Carolina State College, joined TA Loving in 1931. In 1935 he was appointed general manager of what would become the company’s construction division. He then became secretary and treasurer, then president of the company.

Throughout his life, Raymond was involved and influential in many aspects of business, including working with his brothers at Calypso Plywood Company and Aviation Fuel Terminals. He was also a director of Wachovia Bank & Trust in Winston-Salem, member of the executive committee of State Capital Life Insurance Company (later Durham Life Insurance Company), and headed Carolina power & Light, Atlantic and East Carolina Railway and the Carolina Motor Club. Other business ventures and partnerships included Cameron Village Shopping Center (where the Bryan Building still stands today), North Hills Properties, Inc., University Mall in Chapel Hill, apartment complexes and a partnership with Cameron Cliff and Jim poyner to Cameron-Brown Company (which later merged with First Union Bank).

Raymond was chairman of the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors, vice chairman of the NC Ports Authority, and in 1940 he was chairman of Carolinas AGC. Raymond’s greatest accomplishments, however, were described in his eulogy, which described him as “living his life humbly and freely sharing, for the sake of all with whom he did business.”

Hal thompson, JM Thompson

Hal thompson assisted North Carolina State University School of Engineering, then joined the US Army Air Corps during World War II and became a P-51 fighter pilot. After serving our country, Hal joined his father’s construction company, JM Thompson Co., in 1946, where he worked for over 60 years. His legacy is carried on today by his three sons, John, Dickie and Marty, and Hal’s grandson, Travis, who now runs the business – which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in September.

Hal has received numerous industrial and civic awards throughout his life, including the Carolinas AGC Pinnacle Award for Executive of the Year and Industry Recognition Award from the General Contractors Association of Raleigh, of which he was a founding member. He served on the board of directors of Louisbourg College for 27 years and was an active member of the Raleigh Exchange Club for 63 years.

As a resident of Raleigh, North Carolina his entire life, Hal has certainly left his mark in his community and in the lives of those who worked for him at JM Thompson Co.

CAGS Hall of Fame Laureates

Benjy Hardee, AO Hardee & Fils, Inc.

Benjy is President and CEO of AO Hardee & Son, Inc., a licensed road / heavy-duty contractor in Caroline from the south since 1981 and North Carolina since 1985. He is also the owner and managing member of Hardee Group Holdings, LLC. In addition to developing many residential communities and golf courses in the Carolinas, Benjy has also built numerous roads (including significant sections of SC HWY 31 and SC HWY 22), hundreds of miles of main and secondary roads, as well as airport and military facilities.

As the current Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Grand Strand Water & Sewer Authority (a position he has held for over 32 years), Benjy serves on the Board of Directors of the Northeastern Strategic Alliance, on the Joint CAGC Committee / SCDOT and is a board member of the South Carolina Alliance to Fix Our Roads. He is a partner and supports the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corp. From 2000 to 2008, Benjy was a member of the local BB&T Bank advisory board, and in 2015 he served on the Horry County Ride III advisory board. As a founding member and director of Coastal Carolina Bancshares, Inc. and Coastal Carolina National Bank (CCNB), Benjy also serves on several committees within the bank.

Barry gardner, Shelco

Barry joined Shelco as a project manager in 1984 and in 1992 was promoted to executive vice president of the Winston Salem Desk. In addition to managing operations at Winston Salem office, he also co-manages Shelco’s Raleigh Desk.

Barry has always shown strong support for the MCO over the years, including serving on the Joint Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association and CAGA, the Joint Committee of AIA NC and CAGA, and served as Chair of the CACG Board of Directors in 2007. Nationally, Barry has served on the Board of Elected Directors of the AGC of America, the Board of Governors of AGC, and he is currently the AGC National Director for Life. Barry is a longtime NC PAC contributor in support of the construction industry.

Outside of his service at AGC and CAGC, Barry has served as Chairman of the NC Building Code Council, Board Member and Past Chairman of the Frankie Lemmon School Board, and currently serves on the Engineering Advisory Board. of his alma mater. North Carolina State University.

Mark Stubley, Olgetree Deakins

Over the years, Mark has supported the Carolina MCO by donating his time and effort to keep the Carolina MCO members informed of all labor matters in the North and Caroline from the south and at the federal level. Through webinars, in-person meetings and one-on-one counseling, AGC Carolinas members have truly benefited from Mark’s expertise.

In addition to serving on numerous committees of the Carolinas MCO, Mark has served on the MCO of Work america and Employment Law Council, American Bar Association, South Carolina Bar Association, Greenville County Bar Association, Human Resources Construction Council (HRCC), Association for Transportation Law Logistics and Policy (ATLP), North American Transportation Employee Relations Association (NATERA), Urban League Northern State and the Labor Lawyers Advisory Committee (LLAC).

Mark’s heart for community service includes leadership roles with Camp Cole, Hammond School, Citizens for Sound Conservation, Oliver Gospel Mission, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and many more.

John thompson, JM Thompson

John is a graduate engineer from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He started working with JM Thompson Company in 1975, moving from the field to project management. In 1995, he was promoted to President and CEO.

John’s service to Carolinas AGC includes the Chairman of the CAGC / NC Prison Construction Committee, the Chairman of the CAGC / NC State Construction Committee, the Chairman of the CAGC Building Division, the Chairman of the Committee legislature of CAGC / NC, the administrator of the board of directors of CAGC and service to the joint AIA NC / CAGC committee. His loyalty to the entire construction industry includes his service with the General Contractors Association of Raleigh, North Carolina State Building Commission and NC Learning Committee. John is also a former director of Wachovia Bank and the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce.

Outside of work, John has dedicated endless hours to the Methodist Retirement Home, the Paraclete Foundation, the Indian Guides / Princess Program, the Bible Scholarship Program, and the Christian Athletes Scholarship.
