BEVA Diamond Anniversary 2021 Speakers Confirmation – Business Solutions for Equine Practitioners

A diamond-rated speaker program has been confirmed for the 60^e Congress of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA), the largest equine veterinary event in Europe. It will take place live from September 5-7, 2021 at the ICC Birmingham and will celebrate BEVA’s diamond anniversary under the theme of 60 years of teamwork within the profession.

The full program is now available online and includes a range of outstanding speakers from the UK and around the world as well as the 13^e International Symposium on Equine Colic taking place during the event.

This year’s plenary lecture will be given by Tim Greet (consultant, Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons), who will share his thoughts and experiences on teamwork. A second plenary conference, postponed from 2020, will be given by Jean-Marie Denoix (Professor of Veterinary Anatomy, CIRALE, Normandy), who will present his expert opinion on the way in which clinical manifestations contribute to the management musculoskeletal injuries.

Clinical highlights include a potentially provocative afternoon on the ‘controversies between us’ which will include Ben Sykes (Associate Professor of Equine Internal Medicine, Coffs Harbor, Australia) answering the question’ How strong is the evidence that ulceration? gastric cause of performance / behavior problems? and Maren Hellige (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, University of Veterinary Medicine, Hanover) exploring the topic of PPE x-rays and their usefulness or not.

In the What, Why, When Orthopedics session, Roger Smith (Professor of Equine Orthopedics, Royal Veterinary College, London) will discuss the use of stem cells or PRP for tendon / ligament injuries.

In the Medical Hot Topics session, Dr Thomas Divers (Department of Clinical Sciences, American Diplomatic College of Internal Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, New York) will look at the facts about West Nile virus.

A highlight of the session on hot topics in anesthesia includes Mark Senior (professor of equine anesthesia, University of Liverpool) discussing complications after sedation. David Rendle (Equine Internal Medicine Specialist) Jacqui Matthews (Scientific Director, Roslin Technologies, Edinburgh) and Dr Bryony Sands (Senior Research Associate, University of Bristol) will cover the latest knowledge on parasite control and the environmental effects of anthelmintics .

A morning session on a team approach to dental health will include Dr John Mark O’Leary (UCD Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Dublin) explaining what every GP should look for in the horse’s mouth and the role of the dental specialist in the treatment of dental diseases.

From a practical standpoint of particular relevance to ambulatory veterinarians, Celia Marr (Equine Internal Medicine Specialist, Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons) will share her knowledge to help vets advise their clients on whether to continue riding with a heart murmur.

Scott Morrison (partner Rood & Riddle, Kentucky) will discuss foot care for the acute laminitis horse, and Tamzin Furtado (postdoctoral research associate at the University of Liverpool) will present his perspective on managing perceptions of the obesity by owners.

A full afternoon on Current Concepts in Endocrine Disease will include an update on EMS and PPID diagnostics from Kelsey Hart (Associate Professor of Large Animal Internal Medicine, University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine of Athens).

During the pregnancy and parturition session, David Freeman (Professor of Equine Studies and Director of the Island Whirl Equine Colic Research Laboratory, University of Florida) will help with the decision “is she foaling or colic”.

Non-clinical sessions include the popular Moral Maze, which will discuss the challenges of achieving the perfect work-life balance.

Catherine Oxtoby (Risk Manager, Veterinary Defense Society) will prove the maxim “your best teacher is your last mistake” with an interactive session on managing a meeting when everything has gone wrong.

Ellie West (Veterinary Anesthesia Specialist and Sustainability Manager, Davies Veterinary Specialists) will examine how to promote environmentally friendly initiatives in veterinary practice.

Staying Safe at Work will be explored and will include advice from Tim Brazil (Surgeon and Director, Equine Medicine on the Move Ltd) to protect you from customer complaints.

A dedicated feed for vet nurses on the final day includes an intriguing session from Dot Creighton (former BVNA chairman and veterinary nurse Millennium Veterinary practice, Essex) and Marie Rippingale (equine vet nurse and speaker for Bottle Green training) on ​​whether there has a place for a district nurse type position in equine nursing and options for EVN, post qualification.
