Water is the main chemical component of your body and accounts for approximately 50-70% of your body weight. Your body depends on water to survive.

Every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to function properly. For example, water:
Gets rid of waste through urination, perspiration and bowel movements
Maintains your normal temperature
Lubricates and cushions the joints
Protects sensitive tissues

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don’t have enough water in your body to perform normal functions. Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.

For most people, there really is no limit to daily water intake and one gallon a day is not harmful. But for those with congestive heart failure or end-stage kidney disease, sometimes you have to limit water because the body can’t process it properly. Talk to your doctor about drinking water if you or a loved one belongs to this group.

It should also be noted that although it is very rare, drinking too much water too quickly can be dangerous.

“Hyponatremia occurs when sodium levels in your body drop too low due to too much water,” says Czerwony. “Other conditions can trigger hyponatremia, but it can also be caused by drinking too much water in a very short time. All the water dilutes your sodium levels and your blood can become ‘diluted.’

So how much is too much too soon? Think: drink between 200 and 300 ounces of water over a few hours. In the past, children and teenagers called this “the water challenge” and it can be life threatening.
How much water do you need?
Every day, you lose water through your breath, sweat, urine, and stool. For your body to function properly, you must replenish its water supply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water.

So how much fluid does the average healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine have determined that adequate daily fluid intake is:
About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids per day for men
About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids per day for women

These recommendations cover fluids from water, other beverages and food. About 20% of daily fluid intake usually comes from food and the rest from drink.
