BCCC professor honored as teacher of the year

Meg Eubank, from Hilltown, was named TESOL (Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages) 2022 International Teacher of the Year.

Presented by the International TESOL Association and National Geographic Learning, the award was created to recognize and honor outstanding English teachers at all levels to teachers around the world.

Eubank “embodies everything the award stands for through its high-quality teaching practices, its ability to help ELs advocate for themselves and build community, and its commitment to ongoing professional development,” a statement read.

A graduate of Arcadia University in Glenside, Eubank is currently a professor at Bucks County Community College in Newtown and a doctoral candidate at the University of Houston, Texas.

She has worked with thousands of diverse people from over 100 countries around the world in roles as a college teacher, non-profit organization director, professional tutor, high school teacher, and design designer. programs, according to the statement.

Eubank will be recognized in Pittsburgh at the 2022 TESOL Convention & English Language Expo hybrid convention, taking place March 22-25.

“During the pandemic, as it shifted to a virtual environment, Eubank continued to focus on meeting the diverse needs of students and building a community of learners. She continues to encourage other teachers who operate in virtual environments to “Be sure to present information verbally, visually, written, recorded and in as many ways as possible for students, and to implement UDL strategies. (universal design for learning),” the statement said.

With over a decade of experience as a TESOL teacher, Eubank was first drawn to the profession by a passion for building community among students around the world.

“It’s important to me to choose a diverse curriculum that reflects people from all backgrounds, races and cultures, that is both representative of my students but also introduces new ideas,” she said.

In her work with local nonprofits, she encouraged her diverse group of students “to stand up for and connect with each other, build community and support each other.”

The recipient of the TESOL Teacher of the Year Award receives a one-year membership in the International TESOL Association, a selection of TESOL publications worth $250, free registration for the 2022 International TESOL Convention, and at the English-language exhibition and a cash prize of $1,000. The Teacher of the Year award winner is also offered a session as a guest speaker at the annual convention, where Eubank will present a presentation titled “Building Community in an Age of Isolation.”
