Ball Corporation inaugurates Brazil’s first aluminum circular economy laboratory

Earlier this week, Colorado’s Ball Corporation revealed plans to build Brazil’s first circular economy lab on an island dedicated to sustainable tourism.

According to the company, the VADELATA project will be built on Fernando de Noronha and will provide the island with a centralized location for the collection and recycling of aluminum cans. Construction began this week on the facility, which Ball plans to have completed by the end of next year.

Fauze Villatoro, vice president of business and sustainability, Ball Corporation South America, said in a related press release that VADELATA is part of the company’s broader sustainability goals.

“As part of the company’s recently announced sustainability goals and the industry’s vision for circularity, the innovative VADELATA for the Planet Lab will demonstrate what is possible when we invest in and prioritize recycling. aluminum. The resources of this lab will allow us to create a circular economy that will make a difference in the lives of residents and tourists in Brazil and contribute to a more sustainable planet. By creating a more innovative and efficient way to collect aluminum beverage cans and educating consumers about the importance of recycling, we can help solve the packaging waste crisis.

Guilherme Rocha, mayor of Fernando de Noronha, said the initiative was also in line with the objectives of the island community.

“This partnership with Ball is an important step towards our grand vision of sustainability for the island. By hosting the first circular economy laboratory in Brazil, Noronha reaffirms its commitment to the environment, a priority of the state government. The laboratory brings a concept that must be more and more disseminated across the country and around the world, combining concern for the environment and generation of income for the local economy.

The facility will eventually cover 43,000 square feet and will include an aluminum can drop-off area, processing facilities, conference rooms and an exhibition area. Profits made in the facility will be reinvested on the island either in improving and maintaining the facility or in education programs.

Based in suburban Denver, Ball Corporation produces food and beverage packaging for customers around the world. The company employs 17,500 people and had net sales of US $ 11.5 billion in 2019.
